South Shore won its first game of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Saturday and must do the same against Great Lakes champion Hinsdale Little League on Sunday morning if it wants to advance to the double-elimination tournament.

Coach Bob Laterza’s club, which enters Sunday’s game with an 18-3 record, avoided elimination on Saturday by defeating South Dakota 6-3. The win came two days after the Tottenville Loop suffered a 9-1 loss to Mountain Region champion Nevada in its opening game of the World Series.
South Shore has won District 24, Section 3 South, NYS and Metro Regional to get this far. It is trying to become the second Island team to ever win the World Series. Mid-Island did it 60 years ago in 1964. Laterza’s group is the seventh Island team to reach the World Series.
Illinois, meanwhile, has played just one game in the World Series so far, losing 5-0 to West Region champion Hawaii on Friday.
