Amani neighborhood homeowner amazed by Block Build MKE’s home renovation

MILWUAKEE – Several homes in Milwaukee’s Amani neighborhood underwent much-needed repairs Saturday, with hundreds of volunteers donating their time and resources throughout the day.

As part of Revitalize Milwaukee’s annual Block Build MKE, volunteers from area construction companies flocked to the neighborhood.

Matt Iwanski, senior VP of Berghammer Construction, said he was excited to be part of the initiative.

“I liked the message and the purpose,” Iwanski said. “It’s great to see how we’re helping – that we’re coming together and helping someone who can’t necessarily do everything themselves, but is trying.”

The program aims to help improve the quality of life of people in need. Organizers said this year’s Amani neighborhood was one of the most affected in the city.

After Delwine Dorsey read a flyer he received in the mail, his property was selected as one of 11 homes to receive free repairs and upgrades.

“I was a little skeptical, but they kept coming back,” Dorsey said. “I thought maybe they were actually doing something.”

Dorsey watched the progress of his home renovation in real time and said he was both grateful and amazed.

Iwanski’s team, working with Bob Anderson Builders, updated and repaired Dorsey’s bathroom, porch and walkway, and cleared his yard.

“It’s really incredible,” Dorsey said, “because half of the things they do, they didn’t even mention they were going to do it.”

But there were even more surprises for Dorsey. When the work was almost finished, the people at Revitalize Milwaukee gave the homeowner a John Deere riding lawn mower.

Dorsey said he is now well equipped to take care of his yard. Previously, due to his age, it took him three days to mow the lawn, but with the new mower, it now takes less than an hour.

Block Build MKE is an extension of Revitalize Milwaukee’s year-round services to deliver long-term improvements in the city.
