A dangerous chase with Augusta authorities ended fatally on Friday.
Franka Young, spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said in a news release that a Blythe police officer attempted to stop a Mercury Sable traveling north on Deans Bridge Road at a high rate of speed when the suspect allegedly refused to stop. As they approached the Bath Edie Road intersection, the suspect moved into the southbound lane and continued traveling north. Young said the Blythe police officer was not pursuing the suspect on the wrong side of the road.
After traveling north for about a mile, the suspect collided head-on with a southbound truck north of the Etterle Road intersection. The suspect’s car caught fire and burst into flames. Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen reported that the three occupants of the fleeing vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m. An autopsy has been scheduled.
The identification of the occupants will be made following an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab. The accident report for this incident was not yet complete as of Saturday afternoon.
