Michael Pixley defeated Nicholas Meregali at ADCC. What you should know about him

Michael Pixley surprised the world on August 17th with his victory over Nicholas Meregali in the quarterfinals of the 2024 ADCC World Championships. Pixley, a former NAIA and D2 collegiate wrestling champion, defeated Meregali by armbar in the -99 kg weight class.

This win was especially surprising as Meregali was the fourth best no-gi wrestler in the world rankings and was trying to double his gold medal at the ADCC. Pixley made it to the World Championships as the ADCC West Coast Trials Champion.

Here you can find out everything you need to know about Michael Pixley.

Michael Pixley has a wrestling background

Pixley was an elite high school wrestler and became a national champion in both NAIA and NCAA Division II wrestling.

According to FloGrappling expert Joe Gilpin, Michael Pixley is the most successful wrestler in the ADCC 2024 field.

Gilpin said before ADCC 2024: “Pixley may be the best pound-for-pound wrestler on the field, at least as far as credentials go, as his college titles prove he’s been taking people down his entire life. He’s carried that over to grappling, where he has a ruthless front headlock series that he continues to develop and that the rest of his game follows well. Because of the rules here, Pixley can take anyone down – but he lacks some of that elite field fighting experience, so we don’t know what fights against a Meregali or Duarte would look like.”

If he’s not seeded in the top eight, someone will be mad that they picked Pixley.

Michael Pixley was the ADCC West Coast Trials Champion

Pixley won the West Coast Trials with a high submission rate, demonstrating his ability to finish fights decisively and his dominance in competition.

Pixley is a two-time IBJJF No-Gi Champion

Michae Pixley has taken first place twice in an IBJJF competition.

In 2021, Pixley took first place in the men’s open blue belt division at the IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi World Championships.

In 2022, he again took first place, this time in the men’s super heavy blue belt division at the IBJJF No-Gi Championships.
