Additionally, he was also known for his friendship with Cristina, who he stood up for when she was wronged and helped her overcome the stressors of her internship. Admittedly, not much is known about this nurse, but he still manages to win fans’ hearts with his compassion.

Tyler also does a great job of calming his patients, even in times of complete uncertainty. In Season 2, Episode 16, “It’s the End of the World,” nurse Mindy Carlson offers a drug to calm her down after her husband accidentally shoots himself with a replica bazooka. Longtime fans of the show will remember that this case isn’t as simple as it seems, revealing that her husband actually carries a lot of live ammunition inside him. Audiences will also remember that Dr. Alex Karev wasn’t as understanding of Mindy’s reaction and actually yelled back. So while Tyler offering her some diazepam might not sound like much, it’s much more effective than having a surgeon yell in her face. So Tyler’s role as a nurse drives home the fact that verbal reassurance may not be enough in times of intense stress, and that certain patients may need a little medical intervention to get over their shock.

In Season 1, Episode 4, “No Man’s Land,” a patient named Liz Fallon begins coding and the entire team rushes to her side. Cristina attempts to resuscitate the patient, but Tyler sternly informs her that she has a DNR request. Although Cristina doesn’t listen to him at first, he again steps in to make sure she honors the patient’s wishes. In the hospital hierarchy, surgeons are considered superior to their fellow nurses. Yet Tyler knows when to argue against his colleagues’ demands and works to keep his focus entirely on the patient. This again shows that Tyler doesn’t necessarily see differences between his colleagues and doesn’t hesitate to override his superiors to help a patient. Overall, Tyler comes across almost like a teacher rather than a colleague. Although characters like Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey help the interns navigate this momentous hospital, lesser-known characters like Tyler guide the interns through the more important day-to-day tasks.
