Here are Nebraska’s options for linebacker without Javin Wright

LINCOLN – A Huskers linebacker who has already “raised hell” due to injuries and a medical issue has another hurdle to overcome.

Starting inside linebacker Javin Wright will be out “indefinitely” due to a “health issue,” Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said Saturday. Wright, the son of former NU defensive lineman Toby Wright, has battled injuries throughout his career and also underwent surgery for blood clots in 2021.

“I’ve weathered the storm,” Wright said in late July. “I’ve been through hell several times. Now that I’m in this position, I’m mentally strong. And no one can take that away from me.”

Rhule did not disclose his medical condition. Wright could say more at a later date.

“He should be fine,” Rhule said. “That’s why he can’t play right now.”

John Bullock is also slated to start at inside linebacker. NU has Mikai Gbayor, Stefon Thompson, Vince Genatone, Gage Stenger and Vincent Shavers at that position to make up for Wright’s absence.

Gbayor played both jack linebacker and inside linebacker in 2023. He helped replace former Huskers Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich when they were injured or sick last season.

“I know Mikai can play,” Rhule said. “I’ve seen it.”

Thompson came from Syracuse, where he had played defense for current NU defensive coordinator Tony White. Genatone, a North Platte graduate, came from Montana. Stenger, a Millard South graduate, has developed over several seasons. Shavers, a true freshman, has impressed in the spring and training camp, so Rhule has “no doubts” about his readiness.

“The depth of this unit is going to be good,” Rhule said. “They just wanted Javin to get a chance to play. He’s worked so hard.”
