KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – A years-long investigation has finally provided some answers after a former bank employee was billed for a transaction valued at nearly $70,000.
Cass County, Missouri District Court records show that John S. Werner, 23, of Kansas City, Kansas, a former employee of North American Savings Bank, was charged with financial exploitation on Wednesday, August 14, in connection with a 2022 case.
According to court documents, in September 2022, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office met in the lobby with a person who stated that nearly $70,000 had been withdrawn from his bank account without his permission.
When investigators contacted the bank, employees said the victim had since been compensated for the loss, which they now no longer had. An internal review also revealed that Werner, who was employed by the bank at the time, had begun investigating the victim’s account at the same time the transactions began.
The bank also reported that the deposits into Werner’s account at the time of the incident matched the amounts debited from the victim’s account.
Investigators also said they discovered that Werner authorized withdrawals to the victim’s account through Paypal. A $25,000 bail and an arrest warrant were issued.
As of Saturday, Werner had yet to appear behind bars in Cass County. A court date in the case has not yet been scheduled.
