Lauren Coughlin holed a 20-foot putt that included three birdies on the final stretch to cap the Women’s Scottish Open with a 66 (6 under par) and a one-stroke lead over Megan Khang in Irvine, Scotland, on Saturday.
Coughlin won her first LPGA Tour title three weeks ago in Canada, securing a spot on the US Solheim Cup team. She finished at 12 under par and 204 strokes.
LIVING: Jon Rahm finished the LIV Golf Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, with an eagle-birdie-birdie for an eight-under-par 62 and a two-stroke lead over Brooks Koepka and three others.
Rahm was at 14 under 126.
Koepka (64) took second place together with Talor Gooch (66), 51-year-old Richard Bland (64) and Lucas Herbert (63).
FOOTBALL
ENGLAND: Mohamed Salah broke a Premier League goalscoring record with his ninth goal on matchday one and Liverpool’s new era under manager Arne Slot began with a 2-0 win over Ipswich.
Previously, Salah shared the record of eight goals with Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer.
• Arsenal, Premier League runners-up in each of the last two seasons, beat Wolverhampton 2-0 at home thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
• James Milner started his record 23rd league season, opening Brighton’s campaign with a 3-0 win at Everton.
Milner, 38, is seven years older than his manager Fabian Hurzeler, who made a successful start in the English football world after moving from German club St. Pauli.
• Newcastle overcame a 28th-minute red card for Fabian Schar for a headbutt to beat Southampton 1-0.
• Nottingham Forest midfielder Danilo fractured his left ankle in his team’s opening game against Bournemouth, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
BASKETBALL
NBA: Napheesa Collier scored 30 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx to a 99-83 victory over the Washington Mystics.
Collier, a member of the gold-medal-winning U.S. team at the Paris Olympics, made 13 of 16 shots, including two three-pointers.
CAR RACING
NASCAR: The Haas Factory Team, an offshoot of Stewart-Haas Racing, has completed its roster for next season by signing Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer, who will drive for the team in NASCAR’s second-tier Xfinity Series in 2025.
The team announced last month that Cole Custer will return to the Cup Series as a driver next season. Custer lost his Cup spot with SHR after the 2022 season and drove for the team’s Xfinity program for the past two years.
TENNIS
CINCINNATI OPEN: Carlos Alcaraz apologized for his behavior on Friday during a loss to Gael Monfils.
The reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion destroyed his racket by repeatedly slamming it on the court, a rare display of frustration for the four-time Grand Slam winner, who lost 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to the 37-year-old Monfils.
RIDE A BIKE
SPANISH VUELTA: American Brandon McNulty won the individual time trial in the first stage in Portugal.
McNulty, who rides for UAE Team Emirates, finished the 12km ride from Lisbon to Oeiras in a time of 12 minutes and 35 seconds – two seconds faster than Czech rider Mathias Vacek. Wout van Art was third, three seconds slower than the winning time.
Defending Vuelta champion Sepp Kuss from the USA was 53 seconds slower than McNulty.
