Singtel in talks to build data centre in Johor – sources

Singtel, through Nxera, is said to be in talks with Malaysian authorities about setting up a data centre in Iskandar Puteri.

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, commonly known as Singtel, is believed to be the latest international company to set up a data center in Johor, Malaysia.

Singapore-listed Singtel, through its regional data centre company Nxera, is said to be in talks with Malaysian authorities about setting up a data centre in Iskandar Puteri in the southern state, sources said. The Edge Malaysia.

According to its website, Nxera currently operates two data centers in its home country of Singapore, namely DC West and Kim Chuan 2. Another data center, DC Tuas, is currently under construction and is scheduled to be operational in 2025.

In addition, Nxera is currently building a data center in Thailand and another in Indonesia.

Interestingly, property developer UEM Sunrise Bhd announced on Tuesday that it is selling a land plot worth RM144.9 million in cash for the construction of a data centre in Johor.

Coincidentally, the two freehold plots of land measuring approximately 11.7 hectares (28.9 acres) are also located in Iskandar Puteri.

UEM Sunrise did not disclose the identity of the buyer and described the company only as “a leading global player in the data center industry.”

Notably, Malaysia has taken a more liberal approach and welcomed companies from around the world to set up data centers in the country to further its ambition of becoming a regional data center hub.
