It’s been a while since Hollywood has released a good parody film, but the genre seems to be on the rise with the announcement of upcoming titles like Space Balls 2. A sequel to one of the greatest parody films of all time (and, not to forget, one of Mel Brooks’ most famous films, who previously proposed the idea of a Space balls sequel in 2015), is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
Will Schwartz be strong with this upcoming sci-fi film as well? Well, we still have a while before we can judge that. So before we try to get into insane speed, let’s take it slow and discuss the things we know about Space Balls 2 until now.
What is the release date of Spaceballs 2?
There are no confirmed release date for Space Balls 2 from mid-August 2024. A place alongside the upcoming films of 2024 is perhaps unlikely, but we can imagine it appearing in the upcoming film program of 2025 if it goes into production early enough. If only the gag from the original Space balls about “instant cassettes” were real, we might already be able to see the film.
The cast of Spaceballs 2
The only known member of the Space Balls 2 The current cast member is Josh Gad. Details about his character or whether he will play the lead role are unknown for now. It is not only his second collaboration with Mel Brooks after his appearance in History of the World Part II With the cast, this is actually the second time the actor has tried to revive a production with Rick Moranis – the first time was a sequel to the Honey, I shrunk the kids Films that were lost in development hell.
Gad has been acting since the 2000s, but his breakthrough came when he played the role of Elder Arnold Cunningham in the Broadway musical satire The Book of Mormon to a Tony nomination in 2011. He co-created and starred in the short-lived NBC sitcom 1600 penniesPlay LeFou in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beastand even become part of the universe he makes fun of in the film when he calls “Double Agent Droid” in Star Wars RebelsHe has both a third Frozen And Angry Birds – The Movie in the works and a dramedy called adulthood in production is among his other upcoming projects.
What Spaceballs 2 is about
As Space Balls 2 is still in early development, so we cannot share any story details at this time. However, since it is a sequel to a comedy that is known to have star Wars Movies, we might infer that it is targeting the newer installments of Lucasfilm’s groundbreaking franchise set in a galaxy far, far away.
The original Space balls is heavily inspired by George Lucas’ 1977 sci-fi masterpiece, but features many distinct and hilarious differences — including a half-man, half-dog creature, laser-emitting rings, and a metaphysical force called Schwartz that holds the universe together. Bill Pullman and John Candy play pilots Lone Starr and Barf, who are recruited to rescue Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) and her robot courtier Dot Matrix (Joan Rivers) from the ruthless Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Mel Brooks). Brooks also appears as a master of the Schwartz trade named Yogurt, and frequent collaborator Dom DeLuise lends his voice to galactic crime boss Pizza the Hut.
Josh Greenbaum directs “Spaceballs 2”
Similar to when George Lucas handed over the directing duties for the final parts of his original to Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand. star Wars Trilogy, Space balls Director Mel Brooks will be replaced by someone new who will take on the sequel. Space Balls 2 is Josh Greenbaum, who actually has a connection to star Warsafter making a short documentary about the sound designers who worked on the franchise. Behind the Mac: Skywalker Sound.
In 2017, Greenbaum produced two feature-length documentaries, both available exclusively with a Hulu subscription – Become a Bond And Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show — before making his feature film debut with the hilarious Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar in 2021. Most recently he directed Strayin which Josh Gad has a funny cameo, and his upcoming Netflix film – a documentary about Will Ferrell and Harper Steele called Will and Harper — Premieres at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024.
Mel Brooks produces Spaceballs 2 with Josh Gad
Although Mel Brooks is not in the director’s chair this time, the 97-year-old comedy legend is still involved in the sequel as a producer. I have to admit that I hope to see him in front of the camera as Yogurt and maybe Skroob. Also signed on as a producer is Gad, who also worked on the script of the Space Balls 2 script, which he previously announced in an Instagram post from early June 2024.
Gads Space Balls 2 Co-writers are Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who also have their own connection to the franchise they are making fun of, as they are the upcoming star Wars TV show, star Wars LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxywhich will be available with a Disney+ subscription in September 2024. The duo previously worked with Gad as writers for 1600 pennies and Apple TV+ Central Park and are also known for writing Pokémon: Detective Pikachu in 2019 and 2023 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
How to watch the original series “Spaceballs”
Space Balls 2 is the sequel to a film that parodies a franchise, so you’ll need to see all the previous installments to understand what’s happening. However, it would probably be a good idea to watch the original first, which is possible with an MGM+ subscription.
It should be noted, however, that this new film is actually the second sequel to Space balls. An animated spin-off series aired on G4 in 2008, for which Brooks returned as co-creator with Thomas Meehan and as the voice of President Skroob and Yogurt, along with Zuniga as Vespa, Joan Rivers as Dot, and Dom DeLuise as Pizza the Hut. Despite this, the show was not very well received by critics and fans, but those who want to watch it can purchase episodes on Amazon.

A perfect official title for the sequel would be Spaceballs: The Awakening of Schwartzbut I can imagine that many fans will be disappointed if Yogurt’s premonition that he and Lone Starr in Spaceballs: The search for more money. We’ll soon find out what Brooks, Gad and Co. ultimately decide to call the film, but until then, be sure to check back here for updates.
