Cincinnati Open: Iga Swiatek survives Mirra Andreeva’s shock and wins the quarterfinals | Tennis News

World number one in women’s tennis, Iga Swiatek, survived a scare against 17-year-old future star Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open to come back from a set behind and win.

Swiatek suffered a break in her second service game of the match and lost the first set 4-6. The Pole missed four breakback chances, including two when Andreeva served for the set.

However, Andreeva managed to break immediately at the beginning of the second set when Swiatek equalized and forced a deciding set.

When the score was 5:5 in the last set, Swiatek managed what seemed to be the decisive break.

But Andreeva came back and earned a break chance in the very next game that would have forced a decisive tiebreak, but Swiatek held on and secured a hard-fought victory three points later.

The five-time Grand Slam winner will next face the future world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals after her comfortable 6:3, 6:2 victory over Liudmila Samsonova.

Sabalenka is seeded third for the tournament but will look to overtake defending champion Coco Gauff from Cincinnati after her disappointing second-round exit in the women’s singles.
