Meta Quest can now connect to your laptop, gaming console and more to create huge virtual screens

Your Meta Quest 3 just got a new superpower: it can now connect to and display content from almost any device with a DisplayPort or HDMI port via Meta Quest HDMI Link. That includes laptops, PCs, game consoles, and more.

The most attractive aspect of this connectivity is the ability to project your content onto a giant virtual screen. What’s more, because of the way mixed reality works, this virtual screen is only visible to you, so you can use it even in a public space.

The Meta Quest headsets can connect to certain devices – namely PCs – via cable or Wi-Fi. But Meta Quest HDMI Link, a new app from Meta, allows you to connect to almost anything. In addition, Meta promises low latency for an optimal experience.

The app displays content in 1080p and works with Task 3Quest Pro and Quest 2. However, additional hardware is required: a UVC and UAC compatible capture card and all associated cables. Here’s how Meta Quest HDMI Link works with the device of your choice:

  1. Install the app on your headset from here
  2. Connect your source device to the capture card using a suitable cable
  3. Connect your headset to the capture card (USB-A female to USB-C male)
  4. Turn on your headset
  5. Grant all necessary permissions

This method is straightforward and easy to set up anywhere. Having access to a large screen that you can resize and position as you please is a great way to use a Meta Quest headset.

The app can be downloaded from Meta App Lab here. However, your experience with the app’s usefulness may vary, as early reviews seem to be mixed, with several users reporting bugs and lag.

If this or Meta’s Air Link doesn’t work for you, you can try Steam Link.
