In the days after former President Donald Trump was arraigned last year in one of the federal criminal cases against him, Volusia County Executive Jeff Brower delivered an impassioned speech that included a prediction of sorts.

“If certain prosecutions happen and people go to jail, people will lose all faith, then the guns will come out, and then our children will die,” Brower said at a meeting of the Republican Liberty Caucus in West Volusia. “So I’m going to ask you tonight… before blood is shed, before another city is lost to this perverse ‘man is god’ government. We have only one hope, and that is to return to God.”

Brower, who is running for re-election on Tuesday, made several provocative remarks in his 41-minute speech, which the group that invited him posted on Facebook. Brower did not respond to a message seeking comment Friday.

The speech was essentially a call to citizens to act as faithful servants of God to save America from “satanic Marxists.”

“We must make God not only our Savior, as important as that is, but our Master and King. We must serve Him. We must allow Him to speak to us instead of saying like spoiled children, ‘God bless America!’ as if we demand it. It is time for us to turn around and say, ‘America, God bless.'”

A 90-second clip of the video was posted to YouTube early last week by the Democratic Club of Southwest Volusia with the hashtag #weird. This clip was taken from the original post on the Republican Liberty Caucus Facebook page.

Brower, who asked for the audience’s vote, ended the speech with an emotional prayer in which he thanked God and admitted, “This is not a typical campaign speech, because for me … it’s not going to be a typical campaign.” He also asked listeners to recite the motto on the coat of arms of Perth, Scotland: “Pro Rege Lege et Grege,” which he said is Latin for “for the King, for the Law and for the Flock.”

In the June 2023 speech, Brower also said:

  • “I told you I was troubled this week. If you own a television and turn it on, you were troubled this week too, because we do not have equal justice under the law. What we witnessed this week was the culmination of the satanic, Marxist hatred that has infiltrated American society since the very first public school was founded in Lexington, Massachusetts, of all places, in 1839.”
  • On public education: “It is a more user-friendly version of Satan’s deception that man can be his own god and that man controls everything.”
  • “We’ve now reached a point where the ballot boxes are intentionally inaccurate, so that the honest candidates have to get many more votes just to outperform the votes won by dishonest elections that are supposed to outperform the real front-runners. We can’t trust the ballot boxes.”
  • “Frankly, we are not a republic now. We do not behave like a republic. We are a vicious, God-hating, vulgar democracy that claims that the mob rules.”
  • That the gay pride flag that hung next to the American flag on the White House this month “gives God the middle finger.”
  • “I don’t look at gays and say it’s their fault. The gay population of America is being exploited by the haughty provocateurs of slavery who hate our history and hate our country.”
  • “Too many Americans have replaced the humility that made us a great people with a pride that says, ‘I don’t care what you believe. You must believe what I believe.'”
  • On the small number of soldiers under George Washington during the Revolutionary War: “Three percent of Americans went to war and won our freedom and gave us the chance to grow and prosper. Three percent. Do you think we can muster three percent today?”
  • “We must be willing to serve God and each other again as our founders did. If we are going to restore our republic, it will begin in our own city commission meetings. It will begin in DeBary, in Orange City, and even in Deltona. (Audience laughter). I serve a great God. Even in our county council meetings, the evidence is clear that the satanic Marxists have put their claws and talons in our cities. Look at all of America. … Imagine any big city in America and what happens? It gets taken over by the Democrats. And then the greed for power and wealth takes over, and they will elevate the most vile, unbelievable belief systems as something to be edified because they want their votes, because they want their support, because they want to continue to get into office. And as the cities grow, they become a cesspool.”
  • “Politicians and the press are in the same trenches, trying to destroy the republic.”

Election 2024: Who is running for Volusia and Flagler county councils, school boards and city councils?

One of Brower’s challengers, Don Burnette, texted that he had only seen the video on Friday. “After seeing it and hearing it, I think it’s best not to comment and let people decide for themselves what they think.”

Challenger Randy Dye said Friday he needed time to watch the video before commenting. Another candidate, Deb Denys, did not respond to a message Friday. All four candidates are registered Republicans, although they are running for a nonpartisan position.
