Will there be a sequel to “Alien: Romulus”? The ending is open

Alien: Romulus is the latest film in the Alien series. It follows Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and her adopted android brother Andy (David Jonsson) as they join a group of scavengers to raid an abandoned space station.

They all work for the franchise’s notoriously powerful corporation, Weyland-Yutani, and want to build a better life for themselves on a safer planet called Yvaga III.

But when they break in, they discover that Weyland-Yutani has been using the station to experiment on facehuggers and xenomorphs, and they are forced to fight their way to safety.

“Evil Dead” director Fede Álvarez pushes the franchise further than anything before with a terrifying final act that pits Rain and Andy against a vicious xenomorph/human hybrid dubbed “Offspring” in the credits.

While fans saw something similar at the end of Alien: Resurrection, the creature in the 2024 film towers far above the version from the 1997 film – both literally and figuratively.

After using an asteroid belt to kill the monstrous creature, Rain and Andy enter their stasis pods as the ship sets course for Yvaga III.

The dysfunctional siblings are the only survivors of the crew, but at least they get a positive ending. There is no post-credits scene, but the story leaves the door open for a sequel to Alien: Romulus.

“Alien: Romulus 2” could take place on the new planet.

At the beginning of the film, all the characters point out that Andy will not be welcome on the planet free from Weyland-Yutani’s control. The people of Yvaga III are so against androids that anyone who owns one is thrown in prison, which is why they originally planned to leave Andy behind.

A sequel could easily pick up Yvaga III if the population is hostile to Rain and Andy. And even though Rain killed the Offspring, they could easily have left something behind on their ship.

Whether it is a xenomorph or a facehugger is left to the discretion of the writers. Perhaps Weyland-Yutani will salvage some of the offspring’s DNA and continue the perverse experiments.

So far, Álvarez and the cast have not made it clear whether they plan to make a sequel, but if the film is a box office success, it’s not hard to imagine Disney executives will be interested in making a sequel. (So far, the film is off to a solid start and is expected to gross $40 million in its opening weekend, according to Deadline.)

Until then, however, Hulu is developing an “Alien” television series from “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley. The series, titled “Alien: Earth,” is set 30 years before the events of Ridley Scott’s original film.

Little is known about the plot, but “Andor” star Alex Lawther plays soldier CJ and Sydney Chance plays Wendy, a woman with the body of an adult and the consciousness of a child. According to Deadline, “Fargo” season five star David Rysdahl is also in the cast and plays Kirsch, an android assigned to look after Wendy.
