How Alexander Zverev can overtake Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz

How Alexander Zverev can overtake Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner will be seeded number one at a Grand Slam for the second time in his career as his status for the 2024 US Open has been confirmed, but the second spot is still up for grabs.

Reigning Australian Open champion Sinner has led the ATP rankings since the French Open in June and will surely hold that position until the start of the final major of the year in Flushing Meadows.

The Italian leads the rankings ahead of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz is currently in third place and Alexander Zverev in fourth place.

Alcaraz was initially considered a hot favorite and was able to push Djokovic out of second place, as the seeding list for the 2024 US Open was based on the August 19 deadline.

However, the Spaniard lost to Gael Monfils in the second round of the Cincinnati Open and remains behind Djokovic, but could even be seeded fourth.

Djokovic has decided to skip this week’s ATP Masters 1000 event after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, meaning he has lost 1,000 points as he was the defending champion at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, lost 720 points after finishing runner-up last year, and his recent loss opened the door for Zverev.

After his defeat, Djokovic is at 7,460 points in the live rankings, Alcaraz at 7,360.

With a title race, Zverev can overtake both Djokovic and Alcaraz and move up to second place in the rankings, as 1,000 points would bring him to 7,635.

Medvedev will be seeded fifth after his early loss, while Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz will battle for sixth place.

The best American for this year’s US Open has yet to be determined; Taylor Fritz currently holds that spot in 12th place.

However, Fritz has already been eliminated from the Cincinnati Open and Ben Shelton has fought his way up to 13th place by reaching the quarterfinals. However, Shelton will face Zverev in the quarterfinals and must win this match to overtake Fritz.
