Consortium of Seatrium and GE Vernova receives third contract to build a HVDC system for TenneT

The project is scheduled to start in June and commissioning is planned for 2031.

Seatrium and NYSE-listed GE Vernova Inc. have received a third contract from TenneT to build a 2 gigawatt (2 GW) offshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system in the Netherlands.

The project is scheduled to start in June and commissioning is planned for 2031.

The confirmation comes after TenneT informed Seatrium in February that it plans to start work on the system on June 1.

The contract is part of the five-year framework cooperation agreement with TenneT, which the consortium announced on 30 March 2023. The contract was signed for three projects, each worth €2 billion. The current contract concerns Nederwiek 2, which is located about 95 km off the Dutch coast; the contracts for IJmuiden Ver Beta and IJmuiden Ver Gamma were awarded in March 2023.

Seatrium’s scope of work includes the engineering, procurement, construction, transportation, installation and commissioning of the 2 GW HVDC offshore converter platform. GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCI) of the HVDC converter stations.

“With the successful call-off of Nederwiek 2 from the framework cooperation agreement with our partners GE Vernova and Seatrium, we are now starting the implementation of the third project with this consortium. We are satisfied with the progress we have already made in the first two projects with these partners. Now we benefit from using the work from the first two projects for the next project, as we plan and build one many times over,” says Dr. Johannes Kammer, Deputy Director for Large Offshore Projects – 2 GW at TenneT.

“We are delighted to be working with TenneT and GE Vernova to deliver this groundbreaking offshore wind solution. This project underlines our commitment to helping our customers achieve their renewable energy goals by providing innovative and cost-effective solutions that accelerate the energy transition. With valuable experience from working on the first two platforms, we are confident of delivering a high-quality end product to our customer and achieving greater synergies through project repeatability in our series build strategy with Seatrium’s global delivery model,” adds Samuel Wong, Executive Vice President of Fixed Platforms at Seatrium.

“TenneT plays a critical role in the energy transition and we are honored to support their efforts with our advanced HVDC system. GE Vernova is committed to decarbonizing and electrifying the world and the TenneT projects illustrate our commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure,” says Johan Bindele, Head of Grid System Integration in GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business.

Seatrium shares closed at $1.70 on June 7.
