Flood warning issued for communities in northwest Colorado on Sunday

A flood warning is in effect for northwest Colorado starting Sunday; according to the National Weather Service, “sufficient monsoon moisture” will bring showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

A weather bulletin from the weather service in Grand Junction said that showers and storms “may bring moderate to heavy rain at times, as well as gusty winds, lightning and small hail.”

A map posted in a bulletin shows flood warnings in effect from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. for all of Moffat County and some areas of Routt County near Hayden.

The alert area also includes large parts of Rio Blanco and Garfield counties, including Rangley, Meeker and Rifle, as well as areas along the Interstate 70 corridor, including Grand Junction and Rifle, Eagle, Vail and Aspen.

According to the weather service, the storms include “numerous to widespread showers and thunderstorms” and can bring gusty winds, lightning and small hail as well as occasional moderate to heavy rain. Flooding and flash floods are possible.

Sunday’s weather forecast said that “flash flooding and mudslides over large burn scars are possible due to widespread heavy rainfall” and that strong storms are expected in the early afternoon, possibly followed by a series of “severe thunderstorms” in the evening.
