Artists create unique skateboards for fundraiser at Sonoma Skatepark on August 17

The Valley of the Moon Park Riders Union (VOMPRU) is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, August 17th from 5:30-9:00 p.m. at the Rosa Grande Tattoo, 546 Broadway St., for the renovation and expansion of the Sonoma Skatepark at Maxwell Farms.

VOMPRU is auctioning off over 20 unique skateboards hand-sculpted by local carpenter Ranch Hand Co. and painted by local volunteer artists.

The fundraiser will feature food from Costa’s Tacos, live music from local artists, local vendors, a skate jam party and skateboard tattoos. All proceeds go to the Sonoma Skatepark.

Other event sponsors include Community Supply, Winery Sixteen 600, Kanfoush Custom Concrete, JV Consulting, Lowcard Mag and Ranch Hand Co.

The Sonoma Skatepark was built in 1999 with major structural issues. Although some of these issues have been addressed, the facility is still in dire need of renovation, according to VOMPRU. In addition, an expansion will bring the skatepark up to par with other skateparks in surrounding cities.

VOMPRU was founded in 2020 to guide Sonoma County Parks through the renovation process and ensure that the facility is designed and rebuilt from the skateboarders’ perspective.

Over the past four years, a relationship has been built with County Parks and the Parks Foundation to provide design work, fundraising and hands-on management of the park.

In addition, VOMPRU organizes youth events and competitions that give young skaters in the valley the opportunity to become part of a larger community.
