MTA activates cameras on buses across NYC to enforce stricter bus stop violations

Start MondayThe MTA will activate cameras on buses throughout New York City to enforce stricter enforcement of bus stop violations.

Drivers caught parking or stopping at a bus stop face fines starting at $50, which can rise to as much as $250 for repeat parking offenses.

Routes in the Bronx with Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) include routes Bx12-SBS, Bx19, Bx41-SBS, and Bx36.

The MTA’s new rules aim to improve bus service and increase safety for commuters.

“The days of people harassing bus passengers by blocking buses and bus stops are over,” said New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Busse Frank Annicaro. “Now that automatic camera surveillance has been activated, we will hold drivers accountable who block bus lanes, double park in bus lanes and block bus stops.”

Bus drivers in the Bronx told our News 12 crew they agree that drivers should stop using bus lanes, but they are divided on the amount of the fines. Some say they are too high, while others suggest even harsher penalties, such as having the cars towed.

A man waiting for the BX5 told News 12 that cars blocking the bus lane mean that passengers have to walk dangerously far onto the road to stop and board a bus.

“Because now you have to cross and the buses are blocking traffic, you know what I mean?” Rolando Garcia said. “Sometimes they (drivers in bus lanes) want to get out while the bus is standing there. You know, it’s ridiculous.”

By the end of 2024, according to the MTA, more than 1,023 ACE-equipped buses will be in service on 33 routes.
