Terence Crawford makes major U-turn in rematch against Errol Spence Jr. as options for next fight dry up

Terence Crawford made another contribution to history last weekend when he became world champion in four weight classes.

Last year, Crawford cemented his legacy when he delivered a career-defining performance against welterweight rival Errol Spence Jr. In a fight billed as a 50/50 contest, “Bud” dominated proceedings from the first bell and knocked his opponent out in the ninth round, becoming the first man in the four-belt era to go unchallenged in two weight classes.

It was common knowledge that Spence had a rematch clause, but the manner of the loss meant that fans’ desire to see the two face off again had waned and the 34-year-old let his contractual option expire.

However, with both men moving up to super welterweight, a rematch once again became an option. Speaking to Brian Mazique ahead of his debut in the new division, Crawford was open to the rematch provided both men won belts.

“The possibility exists. He’s fighting Fundora for his title, I’m fighting for a title. The possibility exists. He’ll win his fight, God willing. I’ll win my fight, God willing. There’s a possibility.”

Crawford kept his end of the bargain when he defeated WBA champion Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision in a close fight. Spence is expected to face WBC titleholder Sebastian Fundora later in the year after the originally scheduled date was postponed. There has been no official announcement yet.

However, when asked if a Spence rematch was still up for debate, Crawford seemed to have changed his mind and dismissed the question with a world-famous answer: “Nope.”

Crawford’s options are dwindling after a fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was ruled out and new frontrunner Vergil Ortiz Jr. narrowly edged Serhii Bohachuk by a controversial majority decision after being dropped twice in the contest.
