Some shops are open, others are still cleaning up in Merriman Valley

AKRON — A week ago, Merriman Valley was covered in mud and debris. A week later, some businesses were reopening, while others were still cleaning up.

Michael’s AM is open again and staff and regulars are happy.

“It’s like cheering in this store, you know the TV show, you come in and it’s ‘Bob, Deb, Charley, Charles, how are you? This is Michael’s AM,'” said Deb Gennarelli, a regular customer at Michael’s AM.

Genaralli continued, “It was sad, but I’m so glad they’re opening sooner rather than later.”

The Bricco pub down the road is still closed. Clean-up is underway and the restaurant could be closed for over two weeks. The restaurant is urging people to visit its Kent or Fairlawn branches to support staff.

After significant damage, The Noisy Oyster is also closed.

Michael’s AM manager Robert Wimley said his staff had been working overtime to rip out the carpet inside and

“We’ve talked to some people about grants from the government and otherwise it will be the insurance for our building,” Wimley said.

Wimley continued: “Five days was a lot and not what I expected. I expected a few weeks, but we were able to reopen quicker than I expected.”
