Bainbridge residents file second lawsuit against controversial investment

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Bainbridge is seeing a lot of legal wrangling after residents filed another lawsuit against a controversial monkey enclosure.

This week, neighbors filed their second lawsuit claiming the monkey breeding facility is a nuisance, saying it poses health and safety risks and will negatively impact property values and the nearby Flint River.

The lawsuit was filed after a judge recently allowed Safer Human Medicine, the facility’s operator, to intervene in the neighbors’ initial lawsuit.

More news from South Georgia:

Local resident Lisa Dasilva is named in both lawsuits and said they are doing everything they can to prevent the monkey facility from coming to town.

“I think about a dozen citizens came together and asked, ‘Well, what impact is this going to have on us as individuals?’ And let’s go ahead and stop this facility from being built, because ultimately our goal is to stop it,” Dasilva said.

Safer Human Medicine says the lawsuit is without merit and plans to proceed with the project once the appeals court has ruled on another ongoing lawsuit.
