In The last whalerIn his novel, Reeves tells the story of a white whaler and his wife, a botanist. The two are stranded on his remote whaling station on Spitsbergen during the dark season of 1937/38 and must fight for survival against predators, the elements, an unwanted pregnancy and their own limitations. The last whaler explores the human impact on pristine environments, the isolation caused by mental illness, and the comfort of storytelling.

Cynthia Reeves has been a writer and poet for nearly thirty years. She has been awarded the Miami University Press Novella Prize and residencies at Hawthornden Castle, Vermont Studio Center, Galleri Svalbard, and the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition. She is the author of Badlands (2007) and Falling Through the New World (2024), and her work has appeared in numerous literary journals. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College.
