WATCH: In Milwaukee, Vance talks crime and criticizes Trump’s Congressional Medal of Honor comments

Speaking to the Milwaukee Police Association on Friday, Republican Senator JD Vance of Ohio was asked about criticism former President Donald Trump faced for calling the Presidential Medal of Freedom “better” than the military’s highest award, the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Vance, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, said that “the veteran community is fully behind Donald Trump.”

At an event at his golf club in New Jersey on Thursday, Trump said the Medal of Freedom was “far better” than the highest military award because the soldiers who received it “have been hit by bullets so many times, or they’re dead.”

Trump spoke about the award after being greeted by Republican major donor Miriam Adelson, whom he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.

Trump further described Adelson as “a healthy, beautiful woman, and they are equals.”

“I don’t think he is in any way disparaging those who have received military honors when he compliments and says a kind word about a person who has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Vance said Friday.
