Emergency services block X account due to “hate speech and misinformation”

It said the content available on the website was “inconsistent with its values”.

An ambulance service has blocked its account on social media site X because it said there had been a “sharp increase in hate speech and misinformation.”

The North East Ambulance Service said the content on the platform formerly known as Twitter was “not consistent with its values”.

Posts will continue to be published on other social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Mark Cotton, deputy director of communications and engagement at North East Ambulance Service, said: “We have taken the decision to suspend all of our corporate accounts with X.

“We firmly believe that the lack of control over content on X allows the spread of unacceptable and offensive content, which has led to a sharp rise in hate speech and misinformation that is inconsistent with our values.

“We expect our employees to adhere to our values and standards when presenting our service, and we should also adhere to these values and standards when using social media.

“Social media platforms can be controversial, but we will continue to use Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, where we have a large and growing following, and we will look for alternatives to X.

“But it was important to us to show our patients, staff and future employees that NEAS is a safe, welcoming and rewarding organization.”

The emergency service announced the closure of its account on X with a post on the website that said: “We have suspended this account as the X platform is no longer consistent with our values as an NHS emergency service.”

“You can continue to follow the North East Ambulance Service on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.”
