Aug. 16 (UPI) – Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign outlined her economic agenda Friday before a campaign speech in Raleigh, NC

During the campaign, it was said that if elected, Harris would immediately work to lower food prices by banning price gouging, cutting taxes for the middle class, lowering prescription drug prices and housing costs, and forgiving medical debt.

“Vice President Harris has made clear that building the middle class will be a critical goal of her presidency,” the campaign said. “She will lead the way for Americans who are demanding a new path to a future that works for all Americans so they can not only get by, but get ahead.”

The Harris team said her economic policies as president would protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare, strengthen union rights to negotiate higher wages, and bring small businesses, unions and large corporations together to invest in America and create jobs.

Harris wants to use her presidency to reduce the costs of education, child care and long-term care, it said.

The Harris campaign called for lowering food prices by cracking down on corporate price gouging, building three million new housing units to end the housing shortage and lower housing costs, speeding up price negotiations for prescription drugs under the Medicare programs, and cutting middle-class taxes for 100 million Americans through child tax credits of up to $6,000 per child.

This policy stands in stark contrast to Trump and Vance’s campaign promises to billionaires and corporations, the campaign said.

“Donald Trump is running on a promise to give his super-rich friends another tax break,” Harris’ campaign statement said. “His plan calls for a $3.5 million tax break per year for every billionaire, a $1.5 trillion windfall for major corporations, and an ease for wealthy tax evaders to avoid paying their tax debts. Meanwhile, JD Vance didn’t even show up to vote on tax cuts for middle-class families earlier this summer.”

Harris announced plans on Thursday for a nationwide ban on price gouging by food companies.

“There is a big difference between fair prices in competitive markets and inflated prices that are disproportionate to the cost of doing business,” the Harris campaign said in a statement. “Americans can see that difference in their grocery bills.”

Harris’ campaign said she would recommend that the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general investigate companies that exploit inflation to rip off consumers.
