Grand Rapids’ self-proclaimed “third best hot dog” maker is one of my favorite places to eat. It’s family-owned and operated and really gets to know its customers.

(I’ll brag and say that right after my son was born, they sent me home with an ice cream that we didn’t order when my husband came by to pick up dinner for us because “young mothers deserve ice cream”)

In keeping with their always friendly and awesome nature, One Stop Coney posted on Instagram that they would be helping out another nearby locally owned restaurant by offering free food if you make the effort to eat there first.

Direct access to Beijing Kitchen on State Street has been blocked for weeks, slowing business, and there’s no end in sight. Construction in front of the store is expected to last another three months. For the owners of a local business, this improvement can make or break their budget.

When a restaurant or store is hard to get to, people are less likely to go there and say they’ll come back when the construction is done. That’s not an isolated case this summer, as we’re seeing massive improvements to Michigan’s roads, but it still hurts small businesses that can’t afford to lose foot traffic for weeks.

That’s why the good folks at One Stop Coney are doing what they can to help out one of their favorite spots in town. They say if you eat at Beijing Kitchen during construction on State Street, they’ll thank you with a free hot dog upon presentation of your receipt.

This is exactly why I tell everyone that one of my favorite places in Grand Rapids is One Stop Coney. This family-owned business offers something nice to help a neighbor in need, and that’s no surprise – it’s just how they do things.

And that’s yet another reason to try the third best hot dog in Grand Rapids: It’s owned by the very best people.
