Why you may need to restart your router

Restarting your router or performing a soft reset clears memory and can resolve issues with network hardware, Wi-Fi connection, and internet speed. Before you do that, troubleshoot the connection issue using Xfinity Assistant or the Xfinity app. The next troubleshooting step is to restart your Xfinity Gateway if web pages aren’t loading due to a spotty internet connection or your home Wi-Fi isn’t working as expected. If that doesn’t help, schedule an appointment with an Xfinity technician.

How to remotely restart your Xfinity router

  1. Open the Xfinity website in your browser.
  2. Sign in to your account with your Xfinity ID and password.
  3. Go to Devices Section.
  4. Choose Restart modem.

  2. Wait a minute.

What happens when you restart your Xfinity router?

The reboot process may take up to 12 minutes. Your home Wi-Fi network will be unavailable during the reboot, which means Xfinity Home users will not be able to access cameras, alarms, smart lights, and other connected home automation devices. Xfinity Voice users will not be able to make or receive calls from the home phone until the gateway reboots.

If your model doesn’t have a reset button, press the WPS button on the back of the wireless router for 30 seconds.

A factory reset, also called a hard reset, will delete the network name, Wi-Fi password, and other configuration details. After the reset, you will need to reconfigure your router.
