Steal a horse and ride in a police car. Fitzgerald man arrested for alleged horse theft at Coffee Co.

COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – A Fitzgerald man was arrested and charged after allegedly stealing a horse on August 9, 2024.

According to a report from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was on his way to an address on Ernest Pridgen Road regarding a possible theft. The incident was reported just before noon.

When the officer arrived, he spoke with the victim who said his horse had been stolen several days ago. The victim kept the horse on the property on Ernest Pridgen Road.

The victim stated that he spoke to 21-year-old Travis Cockfield several weeks ago about buying the horse, but they were unable to agree on a price, so the sale never happened, according to the report.

On the night of August 8, the police report states, the victim received a call telling him that Cockfield had the horse at an address on Osierfield Road. The victim told the caller that he had not sold the horse to Cockfield and did not have permission to own the horse. Another officer went to the address on Osierfield Road and confirmed that the horse was there, the report states.

The Douglas Now reports that Cockfield was arrested and charged with stealing cattle valued at over $100. He was taken to the Coffee County Jail and later released on bail.
