Serbia is about to build a museum for tennis star Novak Djokovic following his dramatic gold medal win at the Paris Olympics.
“We have had the first talks about the construction of the Novak Djokovic Museum, which will become another attraction of the city,” said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Tuesday, August 13.
Djokovic has long enjoyed the status of a living legend in Serbia. The Belgrade native and winner of 24 Grand Slam titles ran a tennis academy there for years, regularly attends sporting events and meets with officials.
“Palma de Mallorca has a museum dedicated to Rafael Nadal. We will strive to show what Djokovic has done for our country according to his merits and at the same time attract tourists,” Vucic added.
Vucic expressed the hope that the museum would be completed before the 2027 World Expo in Belgrade.
Why is Novak Djokovic getting his own museum?
The announcement comes just days after Djokovic won a gold medal at the Paris Games on Sunday by defeating Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2), in what was likely his last chance at Olympic glory.
With the victory, he joins Andre Agassi, Rafa Nadal, Steffi Graf and the spectator Serena Williams as the only players to have won all four Grand Slam tournaments and Olympic gold in singles.
Djokovic also became the oldest singles champion since tennis returned to the Olympics in 1988, thwarting Alcaraz’s bid to add gold to the French Open and Wimbledon titles he already won this summer.
In Serbia, people gathered in the country’s main squares, waving flags and singing patriotic songs to celebrate Djokovic’s victory.
