Logan co-writer felt Deadpool & Wolverine was “nothing more than a complement” to the last Wolverine film

Spoiler warning: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool and Wolverine.

Logan co-writer Michael Green has admitted he was surprised by the opening scene of Deadpool & Wolverine… but in a good way.

Green, who co-wrote the conclusion to the Wolverine trilogy with James Mangold and Scott Frank, recently visited the IGN office to talk about Blue Eye Samurai. But while he was there, he also sat down with IGN to share his reaction to the intro of Deadpool & Wolverine, in which Ryan Reynolds’ suited antihero digs up the rotting corpse of Hugh Jackman’s Logan from the 2017 film and uses his adamantium skeleton (including claws) to create an entire squad of TVA (Time Variation Authority) officers.

“People had warned me in advance, ‘Uh, I don’t know how you’re going to feel about the beginning (of Deadpool & Wolverine),'” he recalled. “I was like, ‘I think I know what’s going to happen.’ And I didn’t know! I didn’t know they were going to go that far.

“You shouldn’t take it seriously that they dug him up and that it was really him,” he noted. “It felt less like they wanted to change the ending of Logan than they were coming to terms with the fact that they didn’t want to make as good a movie as they thought Logan was, which is a huge compliment! I felt like it was nothing but a compliment.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is packed with more Easter eggs, cameos and references than you can shake a timer at, but Green says he’s grateful for one omission.

“The movie is so entertaining. I mean, when we saw it in a packed theater, people went crazy. It’s great. It’s a great franchise, so more of it, please!” he said, later adding, “You know, what I appreciate even more is that there are no Green Lantern jokes, because I was partly responsible for that… You have to wear it with a badge of honor!”

The Merc with a Mouth found time for an occasional dance break in between all the action in the opening scene, busting out a (very well-choreographed) move to NSYNC’s hit “Bye Bye Bye.” As a result, the song shot up the music charts and into Spotify Global’s top 20 24 years after its initial release.

This is no surprise, given the record-breaking box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine. The latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office in its third weekend in theaters, surpassing the records set by the last two MCU entries, The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
