NFL.com writer takes a direct look at the Saints’ rookie comparison with the 49ers

As the New Orleans Saints prepare for their second preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, you can name individual players or teams that left something to be desired in their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals and expect them to improve their play this weekend.

NFL.com Senior draft writer Eric Edholm wrote about what he wants to see from each team in their second preseason game. Edholm looked directly at the Saints’ rookie class. Taliese Fuaga, Kool-Aid McKinstry and Spencer Rattler were all players who performed well against the Cardinals. So while they’re not hoping to rebound, Edholm wants them to take another step forward and carry the momentum from week to week.

Edholm summed up the preseason so far: “Nice debuts for three Saints rookies, and they will have a chance to raise the bar against the reigning NFC champion Niners.”

This is especially important for Rattler, who of the triumvirate has the most at stake in the preseason. Rattler is arguing with Jake Haener over who will be Derek Carr’s primary backup.

Rattler and Haener have both performed solidly in training and in the first preseason game. Rattler could feature in the second team this weekend as the Saints continue to evaluate the contest, but we will have to wait until kickoff to know for sure.
