BUZZ: Did Robert Downey Jr. turn down Deadpool and Wolverine after reading his part in the script?

BUZZ: Did Robert Downey Jr. turn down Deadpool and Wolverine after reading his part in the script?

Deadpool & Wolverine brought back the old charm of Marvel and audiences are going crazy over the on-screen fusion of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. One of the most talked about elements of the film was the cameo appearances of the veteran actors, who reprised their iconic roles. The Marvel film also saw the return of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth to the franchise.

Another Marvel hero set to appear in the film was Robert Downey Jr. Speaking to IndieWire, the film’s screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed that they had written a draft of the film with Downey Jr. in part. The writers also claimed that they planned to bring the six main Avengers back together on screen.

However, the Oscar winner turned down his role in the film as Marvel apparently had other plans for reintroducing the actor to the franchise. Rhett Reese told the outlet that the Deadpool actor wrote the scene with Downey Jr. in the same room as him.

Reese confessed: “Ryan Reynolds wrote the scene with both of them, hoping we would get Downey.” He added: “But he also wanted Favreau because they’re a great duo and they were all in the scene together.”

Wernick told the portal that in the scene from the first half of Deadpool & Wolverine, Iron Man is present with Happy (Jon Favreau) in the interrogation room where Wade Wilson entered to join the Avengers clan.

Reese claimed that when Downey Jr. denied appearing in the film, it was “the only ‘no’ we ever got, I think, because people just said, ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this.'”

The co-writer added: “But at the same time, I think Marvel has an ace up its sleeve, which is him coming back in this other role. So making him Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom would follow shortly after? That just didn’t make sense.”

The Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con announced the Oppenheimer star’s return to the MCU, but in the villainous costume of Dr. Doom. In addition, Marvel Studios announced that the Russo brothers will return to the director’s chair for the upcoming Avengers films Doomsday and Secret Wars.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is running successfully in theaters, and “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will be released in May 2026 and May 2027, respectively.
