Daniel M. Schlinder, 40, of McHenry.

According to officials, a police dog found over 30 bags of cocaine hidden in the wrong compartment of a sealing tube in a vehicle parked at a gas station in Volo.

Daniel M. Schlinder, 40, of McHenry, was charged with manufacture or delivery of 15-100 grams of cocaine (a Class X felony) and possession of 15-100 grams of cocaine (a Class 1 felony).

Lake County Assistant District Attorney Mary Vukovich said a Lake County deputy sheriff was supplying his force with fuel in Volo on July 31.

The officer spotted a Chevrolet Suburban, which he recognized from previous encounters as belonging to Schlinder.

The officer learned that Schlinder had an arrest warrant for drug offenses in McHenry County, Vukovich said.

Schlinder was playing at the speedway at Route 12 and Volo Village Road in Volo at the time.

A police dog unit was called to the scene and sniffed the vehicle outside, Vukovich said.

The dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the Chevrolet.

According to Vukovich, officers discovered a cartridge gun with a false compartment in the silicone tube.

The tube contained 31 individual bags of a stone-like substance weighing 20 grams, which tested positive for cocaine in the field test.

Schlinder’s girlfriend told officers that Schlinder was selling drugs for money, Vukovich said.

Vukovich said Schlinder admitted that all of the vehicle’s contents belonged to him.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Schlinder to be held in the Lake County Jail pending trial after prosecutors filed a motion to detain him.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 27.
