Is the roof of Lucas Oil Stadium open or closed today?

INDIANAPOLIS — The roof of Lucas Oil Stadium will be closed for the Colts vs. Broncos game due to a mechanical issue, Colts team owner Jim Irsay posted on X. The window is open on a beautiful August Sunday. Irsay announced the roof would be open Saturday.

Six regular-season games were played with the roof down and the windows open. Thirty-eight of the Colts’ 130 regular-season games were played with the roof up, or 29.2%.

Lucas Oil Stadium cost $720 million, of which at least $620 million came from taxpayers. It is not known how much a retractable roof would add to the cost; in 2013, the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reported that a retractable roof for a Minneapolis stadium would cost $25 million to $40 million more than a dome.

This is not the first time that there have been problems with the roof. In September 2015, a bolt fell from the roof, broke into pieces and injured three people.

In November 2017, the roof was left open overnight. The next morning, half of the roof was closed and it was discovered that a faulty sensor was preventing the west side from closing, according to the facility’s executive director, Barney Levengood.

“It’s a sensor that tells you something might be wrong,” Levengood said. “You go up and make sure everything’s working and then shut it down. That’s what we did.”
