Harvard freshman creates financial literacy courses in Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Students in the Show-Me State will have a new financial literacy curriculum available to them at the start of their school year.

Harvard freshman Katie Murphy, who graduated from Shawnee Mission East, used her summer internship at Pathway Financial Education to create courses that meet Missouri State standards for personal finance.

Murphy put her own spin on the weekly lesson with activities like Jeopardy with questions about banking and budgeting.

“I’m excited to see what they can hopefully learn from this, because financial literacy is extremely important for all young people,” she said.

Earlier this summer, Murphy spoke with KSHB 41’s Abby Dodge about the Harvard SPARK program that funds her internship.

She encourages other students to get involved in their community before they leave for college.

“I think the summer before your freshman year is a really good time to try to do something meaningful to you and your community before you leave,” she said.

Angelique Cheatem, program manager for Pathway Financial Education, said Murphy’s help in developing the curriculum requested by local schools will ensure the lessons stick with younger listeners.

“Her input helped me a lot because she just graduated from high school and knows better than I do what interests her and what will engage her more,” Cheatem said.

Pathway Financial said school districts and teachers are excited about the courses they created.

Implementation would be possible as early as the spring semester.
