Metamora is “obligated” to keep its pool open, but needs the community’s help

METAMORA (25News Now) – The public pool in Metamora will remain open for now, but park officials said it may not stay that way forever.

On Thursday, Metamora Park District officials announced that the pool will remain open after the season ends, contrary to initial plans in June to close the pool. However, the board said a review of the facility found that the pool needed “significant repairs.”

Although park officials did not specify what repairs are needed, they said much of the money for the repairs could be raised through “generous donations,” including from volunteers at the Metamora Park Foundation.

The park district had previously stated that $50,000 of its $500,000 annual budget would be spent on maintaining the pool.

“With this in mind, Metamora Park administration is committed to keeping the pool open, provided we stay within our budget and necessary funds are secured through volunteer work and donations,” the park district said in a statement.

After Metamora residents learned of the pool’s possible closure, neighbors crowded into the park district’s monthly meeting on June 17. There, residents implored the park district to keep the pool open.

In addition, Metamora Pool is where Anna Peplowski’s Olympic career began long ago and led to her silver medal at the just-concluded 2024 Paris Olympics. She said her entire family swam there.
