Amazon builds second warehouse in Woodbury – Twin Cities

Two years after opening a 48,000 square meter sorting center in Woodbury, Amazon plans to build a second warehouse facility in the eastern suburb of the metropolis.

The Woodbury City Council on Wednesday night approved the e-commerce giant’s plans to build a 225,000-square-foot distribution center at the northeast corner of Hudson Road and Settlers Ridge Parkway.

The center, which will open in fall 2025, is expected to employ 180 people. The developer is Ryan Cos.

The center, commonly referred to as a “last-mile facility,” will likely shorten delivery times for products for city residents, said city planner Eric Searles. It will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, he said.

Deliveries from the warehouse will be made between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. using 450 delivery trucks. According to the applicant, 70 delivery trucks will leave the center every 20 minutes and between midnight and 7 a.m. about 20 tractor-trailers will deliver to the center, he said.

In August 2022, Amazon opened its MSP8 sortation center at 11975 Hudson Road to support the “middle mile,” a stop on a package’s journey between the warehouse and the customer’s doorstep.

When MSP8 opened, Hudson Road was expanded to accommodate the extra traffic, Searles said. For the second facility, Amazon officials have agreed to pay for a traffic light at Hudson Road and Lake View Drive, he said.

The Woodbury City Council voted 4-1 in favor of the project. Council member Kim Wilson, the lone dissenting vote, raised concerns about the number of warehouses on the northeast side of town and the potential noise impacts for future residents of the public housing project south of Hudson Road, Searles said.
