I always find short Connections answers harder to group than longer ones, probably because there are just more ways to put them together. Often they work as prefixes or suffixes, for example you could easily combine words like HI with many other words.
My strategy in these situations is not to rush things. Look for an obvious connection that doesn’t necessarily contain one of those short words, and then see what happens. Today I got the blue “Types of Boots” group first, with THIGH-HIGH in particular being a word that really couldn’t mean anything else. Then the “Meh” group, which knocked out OK. At this point, the rest of those short words were easily combining to form US states, so by default only the purple “Up and Down” group was left to solve (though I still solved it in my head first).
How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. You have to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The upside is that you don’t technically have to solve the final puzzle, as you can solve it by process of elimination. Plus, you’re allowed to make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little wiggle room.
It is a bit more complicated than Wordle, however, and has many ways to trick you. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that could obscure the answers.
It can be played for free on desktop or mobile via the NYT Games site.
