Church in W. Bench wants to build housing for people who are “close to homelessness”

Church in W. Bench wants to build housing for people who are “close to homelessness”

A church on the West Bench could build a series of apartments for parishioners who are “on the verge of becoming homeless.”

The Mountain View Church of the Brethren on N. Cole Road, south of Ustick, owns a triangular lot behind the church building that has long been vacant. The church has applied to the City of Boise to rezone the 2-acre lot to build a new three-story, 27-unit apartment building.

“The existing church would own and manage the property with the goal of assisting those who are able to hold a job but are on the verge of becoming homeless and are willing to improve their work skills, character discipline, social skills and spiritual life,” says a summary of the concept review submitted to the City of Boise.

A site plan shows that the church property would be redesigned. The current parking lot would be redesigned to extend into the vacant lot and the residential building would be built along the north side of the property.

The apartments would be designed in a dormitory style, with four to five bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and a living area. The proposal also includes a one-story building with a laundry room, retail space, storage and pantry.

A new covered shelter would be built on an existing lawn area along Cole Road.

The church has asked the city of Boise to rezone the property to allow for the project. A hearing date has not yet been set.
