Traffic stop on I-70 leads to seizure of 50,000 fentanyl tablets and 3 pounds of heroin

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado (KKCO) – A Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputy stopped a car traveling eastbound on I-70 for a traffic violation Wednesday morning.

After the traffic stop, the deputy searched the vehicle and discovered approximately 50,000 small pills consistent with fentanyl and three pounds of suspected heroin.

The driver of the car, 35-year-old Carlos Fernandez-Marquez of California, was taken into custody and booked into the Mesa County Detention Center.

The following charges are currently being brought against Fernandez:

2 cases of possession with the intention of resale

2 cases of special circumstances when importing drugs into the state of Colorado

A violation of federal immigration law

The estimated street value of fentanyl can range from $150,000 to $500,000, according to MCSO, and the estimated value of heroin is $35,000.
