CALHOUN COUNTY, Alabama (WIAT) – A Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office jail accountant was arrested for theft after allegedly stealing over $45,000 from the account.
An additional audit of the account revealed a deficit of $47,036.20. Allyson Smith, the jail bookkeeper, was arrested for first-degree theft and admitted during questioning to stealing a portion of the cash deposit each week, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

CCSO says they were audited by the Alabama Examiners of Public Accounts Office as required by law. The audit found a delay in deposits, which resulted in a “caution” note in the audit’s final report. Upon investigation, it was found that some deposits were made several weeks late, outside the timeframe established by accounting standards, and that account balances were insufficient to cover liabilities.
Criminal proceedings are underway against Smith, seeking redress.
