A number of Fate 2 Players just lost their account names due to a bug caused by Bungie’s moderation tools.
As GamesRadar reports, many players who logged in to play starting August 14 noticed that their accounts were renamed to “Guardian” for no reason given, followed by a sequence of random numbers.
Normally, Bungie account names are automatically changed when they violate the company’s terms of service, such as using offensive language or providing personal information, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
According to the developer, the bug lies in its name moderation tool, which mistakenly changed a “large number” of players’ account names.
“We are tracking an issue where a large number of account names have been changed through our Bungie name moderation tool,” said the Fate 2 The team said in an X/Twitter post: “We are actively investigating this and expect to have more information tomorrow, including details on an additional name change token for all players.”
Although Bungie is currently investigating the issue, some players appear to be unable to change their name back from “Guardian” if they already had a name change token, stating that they are now unable to claim their original name.
“I appreciate the quick communication on this issue. I still have name change tokens, but my original name now appears on the blacklist so I had to change my name to something else,” one user said in response.
The global community leads Fate 2Dylan Gafner also responded to the ongoing issue. They asked players to check back for more information today as Bungie continues to search for a solution.
Earlier this month, Bungie laid off 220 employees, less than two months after the release of its most successful Fate 2 expansion, The final form.
Bungie CEO Pete Parsons claimed that due to “rising development costs and industry shifts” as well as “ongoing economic conditions,” the studio had to make significant changes to its cost structure, affecting 17% of Bungie’s workforce.
Another 155 employees were also transferred to Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was also announced that Bungie will transfer one of its projects – a brand new action game set in a science fiction fantasy universe – to PlayStation Studios to form a new studio there.
