EdFed helps children build a better future with savings account sign-up events

Children’s Savings Account Event Miramar

Educational Federal Credit Union (EdFed) hosted two children’s savings account sign-up events this summer to welcome nearly 60 children and their families.

The events took place on July 27 and August 3 and offered children the opportunity to open their first savings account during an afternoon of fun activities and entertainment designed to teach them the importance of saving money.

“As a credit union serving the educational community, we want to help kids start saving early and get on the path to a better financial future,” said Christa Dotson Dean, EdFed’s director of member services. “These events not only made it easy for kids to open an account, but also provided an unforgettable experience with a special magic show and an exciting visit from our mascot, Eddy the Owl,” she added.

The events were open to existing EdFed members as well as community residents who joined the credit union while visiting. Sehrish Dyal attended the event at EdFed’s Kendall branch with her four-year-old daughter.

“She was looking forward to saving her money, which we talk about a lot. I thought this would be a great opportunity for her. All the money she gets from her birthday presents is like saving it and putting it in the savings bank,” Dyal said. “Seeing Eddy the owl made her day,” Dyal continued.

Founded in 1935 by school employees in Miami, EdFed operates eight locations in South Florida and serves over 100,000 members across the United States.

Christine Dillon attended the event at EdFed’s new branch in Miramar Park Place and spoke about how EdFed membership has become a tradition in her family.

“My father was a teacher for many years. He opened our accounts here and now I open accounts for my children,” Dillon said. “Nothing compares to EdFed in terms of everyone’s friendliness, the accessibility and the way they take care of us; it’s always been smooth sailing,” she added.
