Turning tragedies into comedies is no child’s play. Jim Carrey has mastered the art of blending the opposing emotions and so have many actors here on Indian celluloid. Recently we had Divyenndu do the same with Madgaon Express and now he is jumping into a show called Life Hill GayiIt is about the meeting of three generations, unlike Kal Aaj Aur Kal. This is by no means a drama, it is intended to be a comedy, but a comedy that will only elicit a faint smile, never a full-blown laugh.

So Kabir Bedi has a son (Vinay Pathak) and two grandchildren (Kusha Kapila and Divyenndu), and these kids have been given the task of renovating their hotel in a beautiful landscape, and the one who manages to do so inherits all the wealth. And since the conflict takes place in a hotel, we have an excuse to introduce all sorts of characters, from the likable to the idiosyncratic to the downright idiots. We’ve seen some of them on YouTube, so we can guess that they’ll do essentially the same thing here as they did there. This is a show where the characters don’t make things happen, they make things happen to them, and we’re left to sit back and (not) enjoy.

Kusha usually doesn’t bat an eyelid. She is under pressure to deliver in order to claim the fortune. Divyenndu, who is in Madgaon Expressis mostly low-key (or was he bored?) and Kabir Bedi and Vinay Pathak really deserve better. We would be more entertained any day watching reruns of Bedi, Rekha and an alligator or Pathak as an uninvited guest in Rajat Kapoor’s house.

Director Prem Mistry and screenwriter Jasmeet Singh Bhatia try their best to steer a sinking ship of a show by creating as much chaos as possible with the help of countless gags. It’s like throwing all the darts you have in the hope of hitting the bullseye at least once. They keep throwing, you keep watching. There’s a surprise cameo towards the end that gives us a hint about the second season. That means the darts are still being thrown, which means we’re still watching. Saand Ki Aankh!
