New Mexico Statewide Education Network selects Lumen to connect public K-12 schools

Thousands of New Mexico Students benefit from connectivity in the classroom

DENVER, 15 August 2024 /PRNewswire/ – The New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion recently selected Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) to provide nearly 900 miles of high-speed fiber optic connections to K-12 public schools across the state, including charter and tribal schools.

Connection of the first school

The company is taking part in a grand opening ceremony today with representatives from the state’s Department of Education and Broadband. Albuquerque’s 21st Century Public Academy is the first school to join the New Mexico Statewide Education Network.

Network design

Lumen provides the latest and best high-capacity, low-latency fiber optic wave technology, backbone circuits, network nodes, and cost-effective centralized network design, management and support for the new school-focused broadband network.

The three-year contract is worth more than 4.3 million US dollars In the first phase, approximately 15,000 students from all 27 public schools in the Gadsden Independent School District will be Santa Teresa, NMand at three charter schools in Albuquerque – 21st Century Public Academy, Mark Armijo Academy and Mountain Mahogany Community School.

Programme objectives

Dozens of public schools in New Mexico are determined to be part of the Statewide Education Network, which promotes the networking of all New Mexico schools by 2027. These efforts will lay the foundation for a state-coordinated middle mile network.

Middle-mile connectivity is critical to digital inclusion, equity and affordability as it closes the gap with last-mile broadband providers that connect homes and businesses to the Internet.
