BEUMER builds overland conveyor for Warrior Met Coal

Warrior Met Coal has selected BEUMER Group to expand the Blue Creek Mine, a new state-of-the-art underground mine for high-quality steelmaking coal. The steelmaking coal will be processed at the surface in a coal preparation plant and then transported 14 km to a rail loading station.

BEUMER Group recently received an order from Warrior to develop and supply a single-lane curved overland conveyor for this transport system with a capacity of 1,500 short tons per hour (STPH).

Daniel Schmillenkamp, CEO of BEUMER Group Canada, commented:

“Working with Warrior, we have overcome the project-specific challenges. The design and implementation are a testament to our commitment to innovation and customer-focused solutions.”

The project presented some challenges as the terrain of the proposed transport corridor was difficult and hilly. To find the most efficient solution, Warrior explored various transport methods including rail, trough and tube conveyor systems. Over the last 12 months, BEUMER Group worked closely with Warrior to determine the most economical and technically feasible transport method and optimal route. The result was a single conventional trough conveyor with 18 horizontal curves.

Philip Saunders, Senior VP Engineering at Warrior, commented:

“Thanks to BEUMER’s holistic approach and our very close collaboration, we were able to accelerate the design and procurement phase and complete this time-critical project at a pace rarely seen in the coal or mining industries.”

BEUMER Group is responsible for the design and procurement of all structural and mechanical components as well as several E-Houses with VFDs, MCCs and PLC control systems. The conveyor system will utilize nine load distribution drives to limit the overall belt tension.

Peter Sehl, Sales Manager at BEUMER, explained that this project uses innovative and proprietary conveyor technology and design tools to support the tight construction schedule.

“With over 5000 tonnes of steel for floor modules and raised sections, 47% of the conveyor line will be raised to avoid natural features and reduce earthworks to a minimum.”

The overland conveyor system is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2025.
