Their family name is synonymous with exuberant decadence and corrosive moral decay, the story of their dynasty is a story of young, bright beings with diamond swastika pins. Now the scandalous story of the Mitford sisters is coming to our screens as the first photos of Outrageous were released.

The drama tells the “complete, uncensored” story of Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica and Deborah – six aristocratic sisters who became darlings of the tabloid press in the 1930s through their columns, political intrigue and exposé novels. But any biopic about Mitford must balance family ties and national betrayal, frivolous fantasy with fascist sympathies. In the run-up to this high-society family saga Tatler asks what we can expect from a drama that could only ever be called Outrageous.

Based on Mary S. Lovell’s authoritative biography, The Mitford Girlsthe show will air on BritBox in 2025. Bridgerton Star Bessie Carter, in the role of Nancy Mitford, must distinguish her tuxedo from her suit and her “mad” from her “spirit”. The eldest of the six sisters, who was immortalized in the literary canon for her aristocratic roman à clef, The pursuit of loveis perhaps the best known of the Mitfords. Nancy was a close friend of the writer Evelyn Waugh and began her career by writing an anonymous gossip column that looked behind the scenes at society’s fanciest parties.
