PS4 users can now buy games using only their phone number

Boku has partnered with Sony to provide the Boku Payments Platform, a carrier-based billing service, for PS4 account wallets in Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Buying games just got easier as Boku has launched its carrier billing service for PS4. According to the company, the new service offering was offered to give Sony users an alternative payment method as not everyone is comfortable sharing their credit and debit card information.

“Credit cards are not always the preferred method and/or credit cards can be a far less convenient payment method due to the friction associated with payment. We believed that expanding Sony’s checkout to include mobile billing would bring significant benefits to Sony,” said Ray Ramillosa, VP of Marketing at Boku.

The Boku payment platform will allow users to purchase games and content much faster than before. The wallet funding option will allow users to make purchases by simply using a mobile phone number to complete a transaction. The payment option will be available for Sony Online Entertainment, the PS3 and the PS4 devices in Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The new payment option will be available in the PlayStation Store on PS4 or in account management via the Sony Entertainment Network website. Customers can select mobile as their payment option, enter their mobile number and confirm the top-up via SMS. The top-up fee will then appear on their next phone bill or be charged to their prepaid account.

And to make things easier for parents, Sony has already implemented an account control feature that includes the ability to require a password for purchases or create a sub-account. These controls can be used for purchases made with any payment method, including mobile carrier billing.

For security reasons, Data Center Bridging (DCB) for Ethernet networks requires that purchases be subject to a two-factor authentication process, meaning the user must not only have the phone number but also be in possession of the phone to authorize the charge.

“We believe parents should closely monitor their children’s purchases, regardless of what payment methods are available to them. Just as parents should be aware of whether their child is accessing their credit card information, they should also monitor and control any charges that appear on the cell phone bill,” Ramillosa said.
