Walz stops in Newport to raise money for campaign

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Governor Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, will speak to political officials at a campaign reception in Newport today. The reception is part of a long list of fundraising events across the East Coast.

The event is not public and the exact time has not been announced.

Walz was in Boston last night and is expected in New York later today.

Newport Police have not yet provided any information as to whether there will be road closures in the area.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation is planning a protest against Walz’s appearance in the Ocean State, scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on Narragansett Avenue and Ochre Point Avenue.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley commented on Walz’s appearance in the state, saying:

“So I’ll be at the fundraiser on Thursday and I look forward to meeting Governor Walz. I’ve never met him before. As someone who is very active in the United States Conference of Mayors, we’ve had a great relationship with President Biden. We felt like he’s a great champion of American cities, and a lot of their goals we can see here in Providence and in other cities across the country. So if I get a chance to speak with Governor Walz, I’ll talk about continuing that partnership with cities and with Providence in particular.”

Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien also spoke about Walz’s visit to Rhode Island:

“I started as a Biden delegate, now I’m a Harris delegate. I think we have a lot of momentum, we’re excited to have him here. And it shows the respect, appreciation and inclusivity that the Harris and Walz campaign will bring. So I’m excited to sneak in, depending on the price.”
